Top 10 Money Saving Tips for your Holidays

I’m always looking for cheeky ways to save a few bucks and grab a bargain, and when it comes to holidays there are some great ways to save. If you’re like me then use this guide, to see my top 10 money saving tips when planning for your next adventure away.

1. Cook for yourself

Save yourself the cost of eating out every day by cooking your meals at your accommodation! Source local ingredients to give you that taste of the region while also allowing you to explore the area and integrate with the locals!

2. Rent an apartment over a hotel

Look at local accommodation before renting a pricey hotel: if traveling with a group it is often more cost effective to rent a luxury apartment or villa in comparison to an upmarket hotel, and I personally love using Airbnb when I travel as a way to save cash and interact with locals. To really save money why not consider camping if the climate suits or a hostel?

3. Fly on weekdays or at unsociable times

Do your best to book flights during the week or at inconvenient times such as late evenings or very early mornings to get the best possible price and save some cash. After being hit by a car in 2013 I have issues with neck pain, so I’ll often bring my special pillow if I’m going take a red-eye flight just to make sure I’ll be comfortable!

4. Book early/late

Make sure to book everything in advance to get the best prices available. This is generally applicable to flights, accommodation cost, events and much more… On the other hand there are cheap late holidays to be found last minute so sometimes it’s an advantage to do the latter. For more rules on the best times to book check out this travel hacking post.

5. Shop around on the web for the best insurance deals

Don’t pay over the top for insurance from a travel agent, make sure you do your research to find the best deal online!

6. Get an overseas spending card

Avoid the mandatory additional charges banks apply on top of exchange rates by applying for a card. It can take up to a month after application so make sure you leave plenty of time. If taking cash make sure to change it before you go abroad to avoid hefty exchange rates.

7. Avoid baggage charges

To avoid paying sky-high charges at the airport make sure to check your flight provider’s baggage restrictions, then pack and weigh your suitcases accordingly. Be especially careful if you’re using a budget airline, as their baggage restrictions are quite limiting (they’re hoping you’ll over-pack and end up having to pay extra, then your airfare won’t seem so cheap!)

8. Organize your mobile phone before you leave

Make sure to either turn off your 3G or get a deal from your mobile provider to ensure you don’t get stung by expensive charges while abroad. Also consider buying a local pre-paid SIM card once you’ve landed; they’re generally available in the airports, but do your research before your trip just in case.

9. Look at public transport options before you leave

Don’t get stung by tourist trap car rental schemes – look at local transport options such as buses, metros, trains, etc. Also consider taxis as a viable option, but make sure speak to the suppliers direct, you may be able to broker a deal for the entire stay!

10. Check your property before you leave

It’s an easy mistake that many people make – Ensure that you turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment before you go on holiday both for safety and to save money!
