Scouting Out Marrakech

Marrakech is renowned for its hustle and bustle, its distinctive architecture and its rich culture. If you have never visited, be prepared for new experiences and an altogether different way of living than you tend to see in most Western cities. Here are a few things to whet your appetite:

Souks & Markets

You’ll wish you had some contacts in the import/export trade after visiting a market in Marrakech. Amidst the clamor of the busy winds and narrow streets, a vast array of beautiful and exotic objects are bought and sold in Marrakech at a breakneck pace. Craftwork, ornaments, jewelry, fabrics, carpets, lamps – you name it. And don’t forget the mouthwatering food – highlights include spicy tagines, tender skewered meats and delicious fresh orange juice. The souks inside the old walled city of Medina are amongst the most well known. If you can’t help looking like a tourist (i.e Sales Target No1) you’ll have to try hard to haggle for a bargain. Be prepared for some chaos!

Saadian Tombs

This lavish mausoleum has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Morocco since its re-discovery in 1917. The tomb is the work of the vastly wealthy 16th century Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour ed-Dahbi who spared no expense in looking after himself and his family in the afterlife. The chamber is made from Italian Carrara marble along with decorative plasterwork gilded with pure gold. Elsewhere there are vibrant mosaics and magnificent arched ceilings that will bring the casual viewer to a standstill. You’ll be amazed at the beauty of this place.

Trekking the Atlas Mountains

Looking for a breather from the madness of Marrakech? Head into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains as part of a trekking group. The foothills are home to the Berber people who have lived in virtually the same way for centuries. Watch farmers tend their orchards and fields and goatherds drifting languidly across the landscape. If you’re not sure you’re up to the walk, many people enjoy trips here on horseback. Be sure to drop into a traditional hammam on your journey, communal baths where Moroccans go each week to bathe and cleanse themselves. There might even be a massage in the bargain!

Whether your booking all inclusive holidays or are taking a weekend break, there are a host of beautiful things to see and exciting things to do in Marrakech. It really is a magical place.
