Historical Places to Visit Cyprus

Islands often have exciting and rich histories due to the land struggles of the past and their positions between great empires of old.  Cyprus (http://www.thomascook.com/lp/1×6-en6ulb/holidays-cyprus) is no exception and there are many events that have led to the country being what it is today.  Most are disappointed with the division of the Island in 1974 and are waiting for the day when the country is reunited as a whole again.

Cypriots are very proud of their heritage and are happy to share stories of ancient, and more modern times.  In the past the Island has been invaded with various levels of success by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Genoese, Venetians, Ottomans, British and Turks and it is with each of these influences that Cyprus’ national identity is formed.  You can see and experience the history of this wonderful island when you visit on holiday.  There are many buildings and sites worth going to see to learn about years gone by here.

Tombs of the Kings

Dating back to 300-201BC the tombs of the Kings are a relic of Ancient Greece.  Despite its age the structure and 8 tombs are well preserved and visitors can get a real feel for what they would have been like when first built, with only the more intricate adornment missing.  The tombs contrast the rest of this area in style and are testament to the country’s diverse history.

Amathus

The archaeological site of Amathus is home to the remains of Cyprus’ oldest town.  Dating back to at least 1050BC, possibly even 2000BC, the town has hosted many ruling nations over history before being abandoned some time during the 17th Century.  Amathus has strong links with the cult of Aphrodite and Ariadne.

These are just two of the many historical sites and buildings that you can visit whilst on holiday in Cyprus.  There are many layers to the history of Cyprus and from Amathus to present day, each one is as fascinating to discover as the next.  So book a trip today and step onto a plane and back in time.
