Guam Uncovered: The Best Hidden Healthy Food Joints

So now that you’re a bit more familiar with Guam and its bar scene, let’s move onto my favorite pastime–err I mean, activity: eating!!

As many of you know, I’ve become a bit of a health nut this past year and I’m always on the hunt for delicious and nutritious vegan and vegetarian restaurants. [pull_quote_right]Eating healthy while you’re traveling ensures that you are able to fully enjoy your new surroundings by keeping your immune system strong and your energy levels balanced.[/pull_quote_right]

At first, I thought the health-conscious restaurant scene was going to be pretty bleak considering the staple food of Guam is barbecue, but by good faith and awesome friends, I’ve found more yummy spots than I could have imagined.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the green food scene on Guam.

Pika’s Cafe

Up first, my absolute favorite eatery, Pika’s Cafe, is leagues ahead of any restaurant I’ve ever visited! Located on Marine Corps Dr., just a short drive from the tourist epicenter of Tumon, Pika’s Cafe never disappoints with their locally-sourced, nutrition-packed recipes.

Pika’s is the only restaurant in the whole world (yes, the whole world) where I know I can order anything from the menu and know that it’ll be tasty and leave me feeling energized and clear-headed, not sluggish and sleepy.

Prices are affordable with meals starting at $7 and the menu has everything from Spicy Thai Tofu Wraps to Pulled Pork Sandwiches. Everyone can easily find a great meal, meat-eaters and vegetarians alike!

They also serve organic, vegan ice cream! Say what?!

Brown Bag Cafe

Located right in the heart of Tumon across from the Tumon Sands Plaza is my second favorite healthy eatery, Brown Bag Cafe. Also affordable, plates start at $7 and range from delicious and filling salads to whole wheat and quinoa noodle pastas to signature espresso’s, latte’s, and herbal teas.

The restaurant itself has a soothing, modern atmosphere and is the perfect place to get some work done on your laptop or catch up on your latest read. The employees are incredibly sweet and social and we’ve made quick friends frequenting this spot weekly.

Nuts and Grains

A short ten minute drive south of Tumon, Nuts and Grains is not only a cafe but also a health food store! The menu consists mostly of salads, smoothies, and sandwiches with a few side options and is tasty, nutritious, and anything but your normal cafe.

The health food portion is packed with all natural and organic skin care and beauty products (like Tom’s of Maine and Nature’s Gate), cleaning supplies, and lots of organic nuts, grains, pastas, cereals, and snacks.

My heart swelled with joy as soon as I stepped into this cafe/store. I’ve been having a hard time finding all natural alternatives for laundry detergent and brown rice flour and various beans and found them all in one place!

They’ll even make your food while you shop and then you can pay in one transaction and enjoy your delicious peanut butter, flaxseed, banana, almond milk smoothie and sandwich.

Froots

A few blocks east of Nuts and Grains, inside the Guam Premium Outlets, is my last favorite healthy cafe. Located in the food court inside GPO, Froots has a wide variety of organic wraps, salads, and sandwiches along with fresh juices.

I recently began juicing and now, I crave fresh juice daily and Froots has the best selection. You can get any juice from a detox blend of berries and ginger to an energizing juice to simple, one ingredient juices.

Chances are you’ll be visiting GPO during your stay in Guam (it’s one of Guam’s best shopping centers) and you might as well fuel up with a tasty, nutritious juice while you shop at the biggest Ross I’ve ever seen (seriously, it’s HUGE).

Eating healthy while you’re traveling ensures that you are able to fully enjoy your new surroundings by keeping your immune system strong and your energy levels balanced. We’re often exposed to new germs when we travel and with long flight times and lack of sleep, sickness can be right around the corner if we don’t take care of our health.

And with more and more restaurants offering wider vegan and vegetarian selections, we don’t have to sacrifice taste for good quality nutrients!
