Fuerteventura, like many islands, obtained its start through volcanic activity allowing it to be left fairly untouched by inhabitants.

As a part of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura offers a few cities and six municipalities for holiday seekers to enjoy. Whether you wish to explore Antigua, La Oliva, Betancuria, Pajara, Tuineje, or Puerto del Rosario municipalities you can find adventure, romance, and relaxation. Major cities on Fuerteventura are Puerto Rosario, Corralejo, and Betancuria.

While there are plenty of tourist areas to keep you occupied you also have plenty of natural landscape to explore. Here are five exciting activities to do while in Fuerteventura:

1.  Surfing – wind and kite surfing are highly popular and very exciting. Fuerteventura means Strong Venture, but also translates roughly as “strong winds.” The name was given to the island for the strong winds you can use today for surfing activities.

2.  Beaches are also high on the list of exciting destinations in Fuerteventura as you can enjoy the coastal and marine union that shows off the island’s environmental aspects, sustainable life, and heritage. At the beach one can sunbathe, swim, or enjoy a host of exciting water sports.

You can add some excitement to a beach day by going on a dolphin watching tour. Marine life here is as varied as the animals you find on land, so even if you do not enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling is another great way to explore the waters surrounding this Canary Island.

Swimming is conducted with caution in the more windy locations, so it is a good idea to be alert to rip currents. However, at the right tide and time of day you can enjoy scuba diving from the beach, boating, surfing, and wave runners.

3.  Hiking – Fuerteventura’s untouched land makes it perfect for exploring on foot. Taking a tour on some of the nature walks is the best way to see volcanoes, untouched beaches, and points of interest not on the regular pathway. The flora and fauna you can see on these walks only adds to the excitement of seeing some of the island’s animal inhabitants in their natural habitat. This island is teeming with wildlife, making it a great option for animal lovers and photographers.

4.  Oasis Park is a local zoo that has more than 780,000 square metres of land. It is all natural land with only fences surrounding it to protect the many creatures of the island including giraffes, 200 bird species, and hippos. This is a family-friendly activity that offers children and adults the opportunity to easily get up-close and personal with exotic and local wildlife.

5.  Safari Tours – For those who wish to walk less and still explore, Jeep Safaris are a great option on the island. These excursions can last all week, where one goes from one place to the next exploring the different towns, seeing amazing volcanoes, and various beaches. The route often begins in Corralejo and goes through each municipality, with Lajares as the final stop before returning to Corralejo.

Whether you enjoy sailing, surfing, scuba diving or something a little less vigorous, Fuerteventura has plenty to offer you.

There are untouched lands and beaches to entice you; you have buggies, ferries, sail boats, and numerous forms of public transportation including car hire options should you wish to explore on your own. Fuerteventura’s location makes it a tropical paradise for the entire year, given its near perfect summer temperatures 365 days a year, so there is never a bad time to start exploring this paradise.
